Compliance and Security: Critical Business Components

Few things are more important in business and corporate management than compliance and security. Following legal laws and regulations regarding how business, staff, and consumers are managed and treated is a crucial responsibility of all businesses.

Perhaps one of the most beneficial aspects of compliance in business is the avoidance of criminal charges. With so many different regulations to follow, compliance is how business can be kept in check. It also helps companies keep a transparent, positive reputation. Internal compliance is key, as well, as it perpetuates greater productivity and results in more satisfied employees.

The importance of security in the workplace should never be overlooked. The core objective of security is to protect the assets and facilities of the company, with employees seen as the most important asset to any company. Physical security is one aspect; cybersecurity is another.

Physical security might include some of the following:

  • Intrusion detector and alarm
  • CCTV, smart cards
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Guards
  • Suppression systems
  • Motion detectors
  • RFID tags

Cybersecurity involves many functions, with some of the most basis being firewalls, clean, updated software, web browsers and operating systems. Firewall security prevents outsiders from accessing data on a private network.

If employees work from home, ensure that their home system(s) are protected by a firewall.

A mobile device action plan is important since mobile devices can create significant security and management challenges, especially if they contain priority information or provide access to  the corporate network.

Requiring users to password protect their devices, encrypt their data, and install security apps to prevent criminals from stealing information from the phone is another way to add security to your business.

Regular backups of important data such as documents, electronic spreadsheets, databases, financial files, human resources files, and accounts receivable/payable files is important. Backups can be set to run automatically and should be done daily, if not at least weekly, keeping encrypted copies stored offsite or in the cloud.
